Mavs Take Doubleheader Against Tarleton; Win The Final Series Of The Season

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team won both games of the doubleheader to win the final series of the season against the Tarleton Texans this Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark. Game one started at 2 p.m. where the Mavs won 6-2, while game two started at 5:15 p.m. which resulted in the second Maverick win of the day in a 9-5 ballgame.
 
GAME ONE FLOW
After a quiet 1st inning, the Mavs were able to take an early lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning after JD Moreno plated Jackson Hill, who reached base on a walk and advanced to second with a steal, with an RBI double to left-center field to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Mavs increased its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the 3rd after loading the bases with three straight walks. After the bases were loaded, Garrison Berkley drove in a run with a SAC FLY to right field that plated Tate Bethel. Next, Jackson Hill roped an RBI single up the middle that scored Ryan Ellis to increase the Mavs lead to three.
 
In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Mavs clutched up on 2 outs and proceeded to load the bases after battling for three straight walks. Jackson Hill came up to the plate and plated the first run of the inning with a single through the infield. JD Moreno scored two runs with an RBI single up the middle and increased the Mavericks lead to 6-0 by the end of the 5th frame.
 
The Texans were able to score its first run of the game in the top of the 8th inning to cut the Mavericks lead to 6-1, and Tarleton was able to snag another run in the bottom of the 9th to draw to 6-2, which is where the score stayed until the final out.
 
PITCHING PROFILE
Caylon Dygert was tabbed as the starter for game one of the doubleheader and dominated in his 6.0 innings of work, allowing just 2 hits, no earned runs and managed to pick up 5 strikeouts in his performance. The Magnolia, Texas native picked up his 6th win of the season.
 
Nicholas Robb came in as relief in the top of the 7th and was able to acquire a three-inning save, his 4th save of the season. The Freshman allowed just 4 hits and 2 earned runs in his appearance.
 
GAME TWO FLOW
The Texans started game two of the doubleheader with a 2-run homerun in the top of the 1st inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. However, the Mavs answered back with a 6-run bottom of the 1st to take a 4-run lead. First, Tate Bethel led off the bottom of the inning with a single and Ryan Ellis drew a walk. 
 
To continue the inning, Tyson Pointer roped an RBI single up the middle and plated Bethel. Caylon Dygert plated the second run of the inning with a single through the infield and Parker Airhart roped an RBI double to plate the third run of the inning. Garrison Berkley came up to bat next and scored Dygert with a single through the infield and Kyzer Harrington recorded an RBI groundout. For the sixth and final run of the inning, Cason Gregory doubled to right-center field and plated Berkley to jump out to a 6-2 lead.
 
After a scoreless 2nd inning, the Texans chipped away with a run in the top of the 3rd inning, however, the Mavs once again punched back in the bottom of the inning after Parker Airhart blasted a homerun over the left-field wall to regain a 4-run, 7-3 lead.
 
In the top of the 5th inning, Tarleton plated a run to cut the Mavericks lead to 7-4, and scored another run in the top of the 7th inning to cut the Maverick lead to just 2 runs. The Mavs were able to answer back in the bottom of the 7th after Caylon Dygert scored Tyson Pointer with an RBI double to regain a 3-run lead by the end of the frame.

The Mavs increased its lead to 9-5 after Pointer roped yet another RBI double to plate Tate Bethel, who reached base on a walk. The Mavs were able to hang on after Joe Steeber recorded his 4th save of the season to win its second game of the day.

 
PITCHING PROFILE
Zach Norris got his 14th start of the season and pitched for 2.0 innings and picked up 2 strikeouts and allowed just one walk in his start.
 
Cade McGlade came in as relief in the top of the 3rd inning and was able to throw for 1.2 innings pitched. The McKinney, Texas native allowed no hits and no earned runs in his relief appearance.
 
Sam Collins pitched for 1.1 innings and picked up a strikeout while allowing just 2 hits in the 6 batters he faced.
 
Jacob Hasty came in as a relief pitcher to start the top of the 6th inning and the Keller, Texas native was able to tally up a strikeout while allowing an earned run in his 2.0 innings pitched.
 
Joe Steeber, the 5th Maverick pitcher to appear in the game, came in during the top of the 8th inning and secured his 4th save of the season. The Southlake, Texas native allowed just 1 hit and picked up a strikeout in his relief appearance.
 
ON DECK
The Mavs face off against Tarleton in the season finale, tomorrow, May 18, at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
