- 12:00 AM23h 59mSee the Unseen: A Global Photo CompetitionAs part of this semester’s International Education Week celebrations, the Office of International Education invites all Mavericks to submit a photograph entry to be displayed at the University Center’s gallery during the week of November 18-22, 2024. The show, See the Unseen, focuses on showcasing the often-overlooked elements of culture and community that shape the world around us.Student submissions will be assessed by a panel of judges, and prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place student entries in three different themes.Maverick community members may submit one photo per category for consideration across any of the following categories:Intercultural Immersion: Captures moments where individuals are immersed in the culture of their host country (U.S. or abroad). Photos might showcase students engaging in everyday activities that reflect the unique aspects of the host country's culture, or participating in local events, traditions, or festivals. Photos may also capture a moment or scene, which creates a culturally immersive or -reflective experience for the viewer. Culture & Landscapes: Highlight the natural beauty and landscapes of host country locations (U.S. or abroad). Participants can submit photographs of landscapes, environments, iconic landmarks, scenic vistas, or natural wonders that play a significant role in shaping the host culture. Examples include images of geographic formations tied to cultural myths, or landscapes which impact the current economic and cultural circumstances of a host community. Cultural Crossings: Photos that capture the interactions and connections between people from different cultures OR photos which illustrate the ways that cross-cultural trade and culture exchange impacts daily life in the host culture. Photos might include moments of cross-cultural friendship and collaboration between people, or scenes which re-present an example of the mixing point of multiple cultures in the environment or in an object in the host country (U.S. or abroad).We welcome Mavericks of any and all US- and international experiences to participate - photos from your travel to visit family, study abroad, volunteer, or sightsee in a country different from your own are equally welcome.Submissions will be accepted through October 31, and contenders will be displayed in a UC Gallery Show for International Education Week, November 18-22 (Gallery Opening Event details: https://mavorgs.campuslabs.com/engage/event/9494869).
- All dayPride in the ArchivesIn celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month, UTA Special Collections will have a mini-exhibit on display that showcases materials documenting LGBTQ+ history at UTA and in Tarrant County.See the display Oct. 1-31 just outside the doors of Special Collections, located on the sixth floor of the Central Library. - 9:00 AM8hCosmic Cartography ExhibitDo you like Space? Do you like Maps? How about maps of space?! UTA Special Collections is proud to present a new exhibition titled Cosmic Cartography . Featuring maps and charts dating from 1548 to 2024, the exhibit explores humanity's desire to explain our understanding of the universe through maps. In the exhibit, you will see maps that explore the model of the universe - from the ancients who believed in an Earth-centered system to Copernicus who put the Sun at the center, and beyond; maps of our Solar System and planetary bodies; and maps that explore Constellations and the Zodiac.Giveaways will be available while supplies last!The exhibit is located on the sixth floor of Central Library in Special Collections. It is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- 10:00 AM7hFine Print Foot PrintA collection can be defined as a group of objects; objects that often are viewed as symbols and representations of the people who gather them by those around them. Typically, these are organized in some way through an innumerable series of categories dependent on the collector, but what objects are left behind accidentally, mistakenly, or without that individual’s control or knowledge? By exploring and tracing these possessions, their impressions, and their associated data, we are better able to understand that individual, their experience, and their foot print.For this exhibition, we will take an investigative viewpoint from the perspective of an artist, a scientific scholar, a visual resource curator, and a collection specialist. By combining these uniquely creative perspectives and their interpretive techniques, we present a variety of opportunities for the viewer to approach this experience and to expand their own point of view. On display are a variety of artforms, including both historical and contemporary prints, a series of forensic scientific specimens, the tools used in their creation, and examples of their approaches and processes.Please visit the exhibition throughout the fall semester, Monday, September 30 – Friday, November 22, 2024. - 12:00 PM1hDr. Steven Arxer ColloquiumThis year the Department of Sociology and Anthropology welcomed a new colleague, Steven Arxer, as part of the Community-Engaged Research Cluster. Dr. Arxer is a professor of Sociology and comes to us from UNT-Dallas. Please join the Center for Theory for Arxer’s colloquium on Oct. 30 at 12 p.m. in University Hall 432. Arxer’s presentation is entitled “Developing Veteran-Defined Services within Learning Health Systems.”This study utilizes a Learning Health System (LHS) framework to develop veteran-defined reentry services for post-incarcerated veterans. Veterans’ involvement as co-researchers provides insights into their unique experiences, helping to conceptualize more responsive and culturally relevant interventions. These preliminary findings highlight the potential of an LHS model to continuously adapt and refine programs based on veterans’ lived experiences, bridging existing gaps in veteran support services.

Join us as we prepare fast meals that you can incorporate in your routine.Stacie Ellis is the Registered Dietitian at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she provides nutrition consultations and education for the students and staff on campus. Dr. Ellis is the proud owner of EXCELLIS Nutrition, a company geared toward performance nutrition, weight management, disordered eating, and medical nutrition therapy. Stacie serves as a consulting dietitian for Wellness Concepts, Health Fairs Direct, and American Health Assessments. She recently received her Doctoral degree in Nutrition with a minor in Kinesiology at Texas Woman's University. Her dissertation involved comparing a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet to a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet on performance in dancers. She has been interviewed with Women’s Health Magazine, The Oak Cliff Documentary, and Texas Metro News, and she also completed the Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management Program on June 4-6, 2015.
