Beck Leads UTA To Season-Best Performance At Wyoming Cowboy Classic

MARICOPA, Ariz. – On the strength of a pair of 67s from Cameron Beck and Daniel Cronje, and a season-best placement on the leaderboard by Beck, the UT Arlington men's golf team wrapped up play on Tuesday from the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

Following the suspension of Monday's 2nd round due to lightning with each UTA player having either four or five holes to complete Tuesday morning, Beck and Cronje capped off a pair of brilliant 5-under 67s; Beck's round represented a career low for the sophomore, while Cronje's was a season best and matched a career low.

Cronje sat at -4 before the horn blew on Monday, but wrapped up Tuesday morning with one more birdie to post a bogey-free showing. Beck, meanwhile, resided at -5 with four holes to play, dipped to -3 with consecutive bogeys but rebounded with an incredible hole out for eagle on the par-4 10th.

Behind those performances, UTA posted a 278 in the 2nd round to tie a season best and also equal the 13th-lowest round in program history. The 10-under score to par is the best this year, tied for the 9th-best all-time and best in a regular-season event since matching that total on Apr. 13, 2021.

In the final round, the Mavericks posted a respectable 291 (+3) and finished at -8 with a 54-hole total of 856 and a solo 12th placement on the leaderboard. That 856 total is the best of the season for the Mavs on a par-72 layout as UTA is rising during conference championship month as each of its two-lowest tournament totals have now occurred consecutively (851 on a par-71 layout at the GCU Invitational in March).

Overall, Beck finished at -6 for the week and in a tie for 13th place – 15 positions higher than his previous best placement this year. Additionally, the 6-under 210 is the best 54-hole score of his career, which now spans 11 tournaments and 32 rounds.

INSIDE THE FINAL-ROUND SCORES
BECK
The Mansfield native opened with back-to-back bogeys on holes 11 and 12 in the shotgun-start format before getting both of those back with birdies on the 16th and 17th. A bogey on 18 immediately dropped him to +1, but a birdie on the par-4 5th again leveled his card and another birdie on the 8th got him into red figures for the first time at -1. However, a bogey on the 9th and closing par at the 10th resulted in the even-par round of 72.

CRONJE
The South African also began his round with a bogey, which came on the par-4 10th. He offset another bogey with a pair of birdies on the 13th and 15th before putting an 8 on his scorecard on the par-5 16th. Facing an uphill climb, Cronje rolled in birdies on the 17th and 1st to move to +1, which is where he would finish after two more bogeys and two more birdies on the front side.

KANTH
The grad transfer commenced his final round with a birdie on the aforementioned 10th hole, and made the turn at even par after a pair of bogeys and another birdie. He bogeyed the first two holes on the course's front side, rebounded with a birdie on the par-5 3rd but an unfortunate final double bogey on the 9th produced a 75.

MILLER
The Kansas State transfer made only three bogeys all round, but unfortunately didn't put any other figures on his scorecard as he finished with 15 pars. All three bogeys came on holes 11 (his closing hole), 12 (his opening hole) and 13.

MIYA
The New Zealand product got his final round going with a birdie on the par-3 11th and stayed under par until a bogey on the 16th. He rebounded with a birdie on 18, made a bogey on 1 and got it right back with a birdie on the 2nd. Sitting at -1 with three holes to play, Miya finished birdie-bogey-par on holes 8-10 to sign for a 1-under 71.

THIS AND THAT
Grand Canyon won the 23-team tournament with a -31 (833), two shots clear of UNLV (-29) and three ahead of Iowa State (-28) … UTA tied for the 2nd-best par-3 scoring average in the field for the week at 3.10, and its 171 pars were tied for the 5th most … Beck ranked tied for 3rd in par-3 scoring (2.83) among 120 competitors.

NEXT UP
The Mavs will conclude their regular season Apr. 14-16 at the Maridoe Intercollegiate. UTA's final tune-up before the Western Athletic Conference Championship Apr. 26-28 takes place just more than a half hour from campus in Carrollton at Maridoe Golf Club.
