Pointer Claims All-WAC Second Team Honors
ARLINGTON, Texas – Tyson Pointer was the lone representative for the Mavericks as the WAC All-Conference selections were announced by the league on Monday evening. Pointer earned Second Team honors as a RF. This is the fourth second-team selection and fifth overall selection in UTA's WAC history dating back to their lone season back in 2013 and first since rejoining the WAC this season.
Pointer, in his second year with the Mavericks, continued his strong play at UTA, starting in all 55 games played for the Mavs. In 221 at-bats, Pointer hit .308 on the year with 68 hits, 14 doubles and nine home runs with 37 RBIs. He also slugged .502 during the regular season and posted a .380 on-base percentage.
Black led the Mavs with 21 multi-hit games and three three-hit games during the regular season. He had 8 multiple RBI games, his season-high hitting streak reached 10 games, the highest during the season for the Mavs.
His biggest moment of the season came against UT Rio Grande Valley back on April 30, as he hit a walk-off home run to straight away center field in the series finale to earn the victory and series win for the Mavs over the Vaqueros.
Pointer and the rest of the Mavs will look to bring home a Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship this week in Mesa, Arizona. They will take on UT Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday, May 21, at 2 p.m. on the opening day of the WAC tournament.
