Men's Tennis Starts Fall Schedule Off With A Bang
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Day one of the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open hosted by the Islanders of Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is in the books, and it was a very successful day for the Mavericks, who went 7-0 throughout play for the day.
Doubles action kicked off the event, and both doubles pairings the Mavs compiled won their match. The team of Pedro Sasso and Andres Medus defeated the team of Ivo Isqueiro and Loic Young of UTRGV, 6-4. The pairing of Yazid Lahjomri and Ian Uraga defeated Sam Whitehead and Isaac Smyth of UTRGV, 6-4.
Both pairings are set to battle each other in the East Semifinals of the red draw at 9 a.m.
On the men's open singles side of action, Medus moves on to the East Semifinals in the blue draw after defeating Emilio Vila of Incarnate Word 6-2, 7-6 (7), 10-2. Medus will take on Daniel Linkuns-Morozovs of Abilene Christian tomorrow.
Meethre Barot won his first round 6-3 over Eduardo Morais of Rice University before Morais retired due to injury, giving Barot the match. Barot moves on to the East-Semifinals of the red draw where he will battle Alejandro Hernandez of Incarnate Word.
Lahjomri defeated Santiago Serrano Huidobro of UTRGV 7-6 (8), 6-3 to move on to the East Semifinals of the green draw, where he will meet Santiago Flyckt of UTSA.
Sasso started off singles play with a strong win, defeating UTRGV's Will Roberts 6-0, 6-0. Sasso returns to the court tomorrow to take on Benjamin McDonald of UTRGV in the East Semifinals of the purple draw.
Uraga started off his collegiate career with a nice fall win, defeating Marco Rodriguez of Incarnate Word 6-2, 6-4. The freshman will take on Matthieu Coignet of Texas A&M – Corpus Christi tomorrow in the East Semifinals of the orange draw.
Action continues Saturday, September 14, starting off with doubles play at 9 a.m. sharp. Singles action for both men and women will continue throughout the day as the courts open.
