Gray Finishes In 14th; Van Klaveren In 12th After Successful Day One Of NCAA Championships

EUGENE, OREGON – The UT Arlington track and field team concluded the first day of the NCAA Championships this Wednesday with Randon Gray competing in the men's pole vault, and Lucas Van Klaveren competing in the first five events of the decathlon.

In the men's pole vault, Randon Gray finished in 14th place with a 5.37m leap in his second attempt at the mark. His leap matched his collegiate personal record, which he set back at the WAC Indoor Championships.
 
His 5.37m vault is the 2nd highest mark set by a Maverick in program history in the outdoor event.
 
LUCAS VAN KLAVEREN
In the men's decathlon, Lucas Van Klaveren competed in the first five events and is currently in 12th place with 3965 points. Van Klaveren, a native of Netherlands, started is day off with a 10.94 100m which resulted in 874 points. He then followed the running event with a 6.91m long jump and gained 792 points.
 
In the shot put, Van Klaveren placed 8th with a 14.02m hurl, a new outdoor personal record, to acquire 730 points. The native of Netherlands gained 653 points in the men's high jump with a 1.83m leap in the event. Van Klaveren concluded his day with a 47.86 pace in the 400m, the 3rd fastest time in the event, and acquired 916 points to round out his total at 3965 throughout five events. 
 
THOUGHTS FROM COACH
"Overall Lucas had a great day," said assistant coach Brandon Berger. " His running and throwing events went well, and his overall score is keeping him in the competition. With the day we are expecting him to have tomoroow, he should be a 1st Team All-American."
 
"We are so proud of Randon," said assistant coach Elizabeth Schweitzer. "He battled all meet and ended the season with an outdoor personal best and a 2nd Team All-American. We're very eager for next year and can't wait to build off this."
 
NEXT UP
Van Klaveren concludes the decathlon tomorrow with the 110m hurdles (1:30 p.m.), discus (2:20 p.m.), pole vault (3:30 p.m.), javelin (6:00 p.m.) and the 1500m (9:56 p.m.) all left to go.
