Winnie Kipsang Claims WAC Outdoor Freshman Of The Year

ARLINGTON, Texas – Freshman distance runner Winnie Kipsang has claimed the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Freshman of the Year after a stellar outdoor season, which included a school record.

Kipsang, a native of Kenya, continued her dominant first-year as a Maverick with her second straight Freshman Of The Year honors, winning the Indoor award in March at the conclusion of the season.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Kipsang broke the school record in the women's 800m with a pace of 2:04.61. Her pace dethroned a 2:05.79 mark that was set by Mishael Bertrand back in 2000.

At the Outdoor WAC Championships, Kipsang took first place in the 1500m with an outdoor personal record pace of 4:28.22. In the 800m, Kipsand claimed a second-place finish with a mark of 2:08.01.

In the women's 800m, the Freshman qualified for the NCAA West Qualifiers in Faytteville, Arkansas and ran a 2:07.19.
