CMAS Presents Mobilizing Teachers: Educational Politics and The New Labor Movement in Latin America

Thursday, October 10, 2024 12:30–2:00 PM
  • Location
    Neches Room, University Center
  • Description
The Center for Mexican American Studies Speaker Series, in collaboration with the UTA Political Science Department presents: "Mobilizing Teachers: Educational Politics and The New Labor Movement in Latin America" with Christopher Chambers-Ju.

Mobilizing Teachers shows how teachers’ unions have turned into powerful labor organizations that have developed different political roles. Chambers-Ju's book provides a framework for explaining teachers' contrasting political roles as a lens to think more broadly about themes like democratization, social mobilization, and education politics.

Christopher Chambers-Ju is an assistant professor of political science at UTA. In Mobilizing Teachers: Education Politics and the New Labor Movement in Latin America (Cambridge University Press, 2024), he explores the different ways that teachers’ unions mobilize in politics and influence policy, with a focus on Latin America. His research interests include labor, political economy, education policy, and Latin America. His work has appeared in Comparative Politics, Latin American Politics & Society, and Political Science & Politics. Dr. Chambers-Ju earned a PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, join us for this thought-provoking lecture. It is free and open to the public. Please RSVP at Mav Engage to aid in the preparation and quick attendance processing.
