Mavericks and the wider North Texas community are invited to recognize and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at The University of Texas at Arlington. UTA’s student and campus groups are hosting a series of events that celebrate Hispanic history, culture and influence in the United States.

“A lesson that everyone can learn from Hispanic Heritage Month is that even though it’s just a month, we can celebrate our culture year-round,” said David Reynoso, an aerospace engineering doctoral student. “Hispanic Heritage Month encourages me to bring my whole self into everything that I do and not leave any part of my identity behind.”

The University kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations on Monday, Sept. 16, with a Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff event in the Bluebonnet Ballroom. Mavericks enjoyed an evening of music from UTA’s Mariachi Los Jinetes, fun, community and so much more.

Upcoming events include the following:

• Join the Latinx Graduate Student Association for the Latino Arts Event to explore the richness of Latino culture on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the EDGE Center.
• The Center for Mexican American Studies Speaker Series, in collaboration with the UTA Hispanic Media Initiative, present “Journalism in the Borderlands” with Alfredo Cochado on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the University Center Red River Room.
• EXCEL Campus Activities, the Intercultural Student Engagement Center (ISEC) and UTA Ambassadors are hosting the Viva La Hispanidad event on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 12 to 3 p.m. in Brazos Park. There will be food, music, performances and giveaways for attendees.
• Join Hispanic-Serving Institution Initiatives and ISEC for pan dulce, chai and more at the Taste of Culturas: Pan Dulce and Chai event on Monday, Oct. 7, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the ISEC office in the University Center.
• The Center for Mexican American Studies Speaker Series, in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, present “Mobilizing Teachers: Education Politics and the New Labor Movement in North America” with Christopher Chambers-Ju on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the University Center Neches Room.

This year marked the 10th year UTA has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education. UTA celebrated and recognized the designation during National HSIs Week, held the week before the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, with events on campus.
