Students, faculty, and staff gathered at College Park Center to ring in a new academic year at The University of Texas at Arlington with MavsMeet Convocation. The high-spirited tradition takes place every year on the first day of the fall semester.

The lively crowd heard from UTA leadership, including President Jennifer Cowley, Provost Tamara Brown, and student affairs Vice President Lowell Davis; student body president Deon Rodrigues; Mr. UTA Florencio Gobellan; Ms. UTA Jennifer Sanchez; and others. UTA’s spirit groups gave performances and kept attendees energized with T-shirt tosses. Mavericks also cheered and hollered for UTA’s very own silver and bronze Olympic medalist Austen Smith, who represented Team USA in skeet shooting at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In her speech, President Cowley gave a message of encouragement to “dream big” and offered advice on how students can make the most out of their time at UTA.

“This University will support you and your dreams and do everything in our power to help you get there,” she said. “So whether you know what your path forward is or not, I and the rest of our UTA team are here to support you.”

Dr. Brown added that it’s her mission to help students along their own paths by reducing or eliminating the obstacles that stand in their way.

“We will teach and train you so you have the knowledge and skills to lead successful and fulfilling lives,” she said. “We will offer guidance and mentorship that help you get the most out of your time at UT Arlington.”

Rodrigues reminded Mavericks to build a community and find a support system to make their college journey memorable.

“The Maverick family and the community here at UTA will make your experience special, but it is the people you meet along the way who make your experience memorable,” he said.

He also advised students to take everything one step at a time.

“I want to let you know that it’s okay to not have it all figured out. I was in your shoes—I was running late to classes and worried about exams and my future. I still am. Instead of chasing success, I want all of you to take small steps that will help you achieve your goals. Don’t chase success—chase excellence and success with follow you.”

Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas was the featured keynote speaker. She was interviewed on stage by women’s basketball head coach Shereka Wright.

Following MavsMeet Convocation, students headed to the After Party in Brazos Park to keep the celebration going with food, music, games and activities.
